If you had your HVAC system installed in 2010 or earlier, there is a high chance it runs on an R-22 refrigerant. R-22 refrigerant was phased out of production on January 1, 2020, due to its contribution to global warming and ozone depletion.
R-22 refrigerant is also commonly known as HCFC-22 freon and R22 freon. It’s a chemical used in air conditioners and heat pumps to bring cool air into your home.
The R-22 refrigerant emissions that release into the environment deplete the earth’s ozone layer, contributing to worldwide climate change. In fact, the EPA has stated that the collective volume of R-22 emissions since its creation has resulted in an ozone hole covering the South Pole.
For this reason, the EPA is restricting all production of R-22 refrigerant and other ozone-diminishing substances like HCFCs, Halons, and CFCs.
R-22 refrigerant is no longer imported or produced into the United States. However, it does still exist inside older HVAC units. If your HVAC unit still uses R-22 refrigerant and runs out, certain HVAC companies might have access to recycled or recovered R-22 and can refuel your system.
On the other hand, if you need to replace your HVAC unit, you won’t be able to install another system that uses R-22 refrigerant.
Individuals with R-22 systems should consider installing new systems. R410A systems are a common replacement. Others include R407A, R407C, and R134a. A new HVAC system will save you money on future repairs, and you will no longer have to worry about finding R-22 refrigerant, which is in extremely low supply.
